World-renowned film composer A. R. Rahman received an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music in October 2014. At a sold-out concert celebrating his career at Boston’s Symphony Hall, 109 students and faculty performed songs paying tribute to his distinguished work, with Rahman performing alongside the group for select pieces. In addition to the performance, Rahman conducted a master class at the Berklee Performance Center. He also explored the college’s new, state-of-the-art film scoring studios, where he connected with students in their learning environment. In honor of Rahman’s new relationship with Berklee, the college established an A. R. Rahman scholarship at Berklee College of Music, a Presidential scholarship covering the full cost of a Berklee education, to help bring students from India to Berklee.
In May 2016, the first Berklee A. R. Rahman scholarships were awarded to three Indian students, one each from Assam, Uttarakhand, and New Delhi.
It is our endeavor at the Berklee India Exchange to continue to provide access to higher education in music and provide opportunities for financial assistance to be granted to talented, deserving musicians from India.
In addition to the Berklee A. R. Rahman scholarship, all prospective students to the college's full-time degree or diploma programs are automatically considered for other merit-based scholarships. The audition and interview process, a required part of admission to the college, doubles as a scholarship screening process.
